[SOLVED] P16A7 Airpath / MAF Signal Too Low

:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

What a hell of an ordeal.

If you've ever had the opportunity to experience an encounter with Code P16A7, you're one of very few proud owners. And an even more select few wrote about your saga. So many threads died for the cause of this error code, which is weird because it causes the EML system to crash, and you have to restart the engine. Even if you're on the highway.

Diagnosis of the exact issue is SUPER difficult. If your MAF isn't toast, the list of things gets longer and longer. And, because the code isn't set until the calculated air intake is way off from what the DME expects, you've got a lot of problems.

Look for physical problems in the intake and exhaust first. Is an exhaust pipe smashed? Intake boot torn off? Not any of that? Check your catalytic converters. Pull the pre-cat O2 sensors, take it for a quick drive. If it drives better and the EML system doesn't crash, you found your $1600+ problem. But you're not done yet!

If you don't figure out what plugged the cats, they're just going to plug again. So, what else did you ignore too long like me? I ignored a CCV too long, because I had oil leaks too, and thought the leaks were the sole source of oil loss. Whoops. Luckily, not too many things can trash a cat: Burning oil, running rich, or coolant in your exhaust. So, chase those demons at the same time you replace those cats.

Unfortunately the only totally-legal, problem-free method to replace the cats is to buy new OEM ones. It's illegal in some places to buy used cats, some junkyards don't want to sell them even when they are, and because of the scrap value, they're pretty expensive even used. Googling around seems to indicate that most aftermarket solutions will end up throwing a P0420 or P0421 cat inefficiency code on long trips.

Going catless is against the rules, and unless you live in a country that doesn't require them, you'll be dealing with a CEL. If your car uses a MS43 DME, you can flash the EU2 programming - but you'll still have an issue. Some states require the CEL to light up and go out when the key is first turned on. If you have MS45.1, no such option exists. You can get a tune for either, if you want to spend the dough. O2 simulators are iffy too, unless they actually respond to the DME testing catalytic efficiency. You can do it with an Innovate LC-1 or LC-2, I think there's other options.

After all of that, you're now stuck with two left over cats. Don't toss 'em - they're worth enough to pay for the headers. :rofl: But prepare for a headache. Some states require a business license to sell them for scrap. Some scrappers will call the cops on you, like the one I visited did. Less holier-than-thou scrappers online will pay a couple hundred for them AND pay shipping.

On a final note: Use the search tool. It works, look at my post count. I've done all the general maintenance, that bastard CCV, the kafkaesque factory software tools/DIS setup, and a bazillion other things without having to barely open my mouth. The more you know.
